Editor's note: Popcorn Time, formerly known as Napster for the movies, is coming to an end. The entertainment landscape has changed dramatically since 2014 when the app was first launched. Just like music, people have shown a willingness to pay for content while there are legal, decent and affordable alternatives. The current market offers a flood of video streaming services for customers to choose from, which led to today's announcement.

The show was broadcast in February 2014 to simplify the process of watching illegal movies and TV shows online.

In an interview with Torrent Freak shortly thereafter, he tightened. One of the product developers said that everyone who worked on Popcorn Time was a huge fan of the movie, and most of them had Netflix accounts. The developer thought going to the movies was the best way to experience a movie, but that's not always where the Popcorn came in.

“We hate not having the opportunity. Watch some movies at home.” Popcorn Time is a test to show that you can do better for users and you can do it with BitTorrent.

Naturally Hollywood didn't pay much attention to the idea and the original program was quickly removed. Supporters insisted, and soon several forks were built to keep the concept alive. There would be many legal challenges, but that doesn't mean the service is down.

The Popcorn Time team told Torrent Freak that waning interest from the hacker community has led to the service shutting down.

"It's Time to say goodbye," the team noted. "The world no longer needs Popcorn time."
