https://safirsoft.com In the midst of China's mining suppression, major mining pools are facing communication problems
Why it matters: Some of the top crypto mining pools, including Binance Pool, F2pool, and ViaBTC, reported widespread disruptions early Saturday morning. According to the official Telegram channels and various Reddit threads, it appears that the group's unrest was largely due to DNS issues. Although this issue does not apply to the three groups listed, it represents more than 35% of the total Bitcoin network hash rate.

A suspected attack on several Chinese cryptocurrency mining pools has caused widespread connectivity issues for users around the world as of Saturday morning. Alejandro de la Torre, a cryptocurrency consultant and former vice president of the Bolin mining Pool, noted that connectivity issues appear to have been targeted, primarily affecting Chinese miners and pools. Related, it may be the result of a DNS poisoning attack by the Chinese government in response to the country's recent ban on cryptocurrency and mining. This kind of DNS manipulation can result in anything from failing to resolve the domain name to redirecting traffic to fraudulent sites. His speculation as to the predominantly Chinese target base of the attack and the timing of the country's latest crackdown on cryptocurrency were bolstered.

Low hash rate refers to the processing power that a miner or pool contributes to the overall network of a particular blockchain. A hash (h/s) is a special function that meets the requirements of the blockchain to solve a cryptographic computation. The mining speed of some coins, such as Atrium, is measured in mega hashes per second (Mh/s) or 1,000,000 arithmetic hashes per second (hour/sec). On the other hand, Bitcoin is measured in terms of oxidation per second (Eh/s). This is much greater than the quintillion hours per second. That's 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 hours per second for anyone who doesn't know how many zeros are in a quintile.

The most affected groups have advised their users to make changes to the DNS to help prevent further disruption. Using a VPN to circumvent connections restrictions has also been a recommended solution by pool service providers.
