As already mentioned, it is a common misconception that black holes behave like cosmic vacuum cleaners and trap any matter in their environment. In fact, only things that cross the event horizon - including light - get swallowed up and can't escape, even though black holes are dirty eaters. This means that a part of the body's substance is actually being ejected in a powerful jet.

If this object is a star, the process of being crushed (or "spaghetti") by a strong gravitational force is a black hole. The event occurs beyond the horizon and a portion of the star's main mass is forcefully ejected. This in turn can form a rotating ring of matter (known as a boosting disk) around the black hole that emits powerful X-rays, visible light, and sometimes radio waves. These jets are a way for astronomers to indirectly infer the existence of a black hole. They are known as "tidal disturbances" (TDEs).

The new candidate is TDE J1533 + 2727. Two interns at Ravi High School first noticed this when he was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. Looking at the archives, they noticed that a photo of a glowing radio object taken in the mid-1990s had largely faded by 2017. They found photos of the same object in the archives of the 300-foot Green Bank telescope showing the object. It was brighter in 1986/87.

New observations by VLA Narrator and his team led to the conclusion that the object was a TDE - the result of a very supermassive black hole at the center of the black hole. A galaxy 500 million light-years away sent us a star that swallowed a powerful radio jet traveling at close to the speed of light. The discovery is shared with astronomers at the University of Toronto, who also independently found the object.

This is the closest example of this type of TDE filter ever found, showing that radio beam events may be more common than astronomers previously thought. The Ravi group previously observed another possible bright TDE radio using the VLA, although it could also be a flare from an active supermassive black hole.
