NASA's James Webb Space Telescope mission explored another landmark Saturday, as the observatory's main mirror was successfully deployed and replaced over the course of two days. So far, so good.

The 21-foot gold-plated base mirror must be folded to fit the nose cone of the rocket that takes it into space. This maneuver came on the heels of several other significant spacecraft deployments, including the unveiling of the five-layer solar shield, and the completion of all major deployments.

The web will spend the next few weeks continuing its journey to Level 2. The place of listing. Along the way, the launch team begins calibrating the 18 main mirror sections with 126 actuators behind the mirror sections to properly align the telescope's optics.
