Fish learned to work with a fish tank on wheels. Today, we have another story about lab animals learning to drive, but this time the drivers weren't the mammals involved - they were goldfish that learned how to drive a vehicle with fish in a terrestrial environment.

The first question most people ask at this point is "Why?" In a study conducted on mice in 2019, researchers attempted to study environmental stress, an activity that reduces stress levels in mice. The study, conducted by Shahar Givon and colleagues at Ben-Gurion University in Nevk, Israel, and published in Behavioral Research on the Brain, aimed to discover something a little different.

In particular, the idea was let's see if fish navigation skills are universal and work in very unfamiliar environments, a concept known as the field transfer method. And you have to admit, driving a tank into a room in an environmental research lab is completely uncommon for a goldfish.

A good aquarium - how fast is it?

The field of view is basically an aquarium on wheels. Unlike animatronic mice, there is no physical control for learning to use fish. Instead, a camera pointing down tracks the position of the fish in the tank. If the fish is near one of the tank walls and facing outwards, a fish control algorithm (running on the Raspberry Pi 3B+) is used to move the field of view in that direction. If the field of view is placed 20 cm from the walls of a dry environment, in a 4 x 3 m container, the lead sensor on the same excavator cancels the fish control algorithm. 30 minutes, three times a week, once every other day. First of all, the fish will be rewarded if they move from the center of the room to the target (pink corrugated board).

The fish have already learned to command the field of view and have become more proficient at it. Play it over time in terms of achieving tasks (pass to goal) and time taken to complete them. The authors wanted to explore that fish not only memorize a combination of movements to win a prize, so they repeated some of the experiments by placing a fresh start inside the room or adding lure of different colors.

Not only was the goldfish able to handle these changes, but it was able to approach targets from different angles, indicating that the animals had an internal view of the world around them. This is despite the fact that the interface between the air, the glass walls of the tank, and the water creates nonlinear refractions, which are probably quite different from the environment in which the fish's eyes evolved.
