China may be looking for NASA's leap to the moon.

China appears to be speeding up its plans to land on the moon by 2030, using a modified version of the current rocket.

The chief designer of the Long March rocket family, Long Lihao, said China could use two modified Long March 5 rockets to land on the moon in less than a decade. He spoke to him earlier this week at the 35th National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition in China. The full video can be found here.

During Lahau's speech, he said that one of the massive rockets would send a lunar lander into orbit around the moon while the other would send a crew to visit it. Then the crew is transported to the probe, landed on the moon, and walked on its surface for about six hours. Then part of the moon probe ascends to meet the spacecraft and returns to Earth.

Laho's remarks do not reflect the official influence of China's space policy - at least not yet. Andrew Jones, a journalist who covers China's space program, said he remains an influential figure in Chinese space policy. "This is a good sign of China's efforts to realize this plan," he told Ars. "Obviously there will be an announcement of this missile at the Zhuhai Air Show in late September or early October." The Long March 5 missile, which has the same capability as the Delta 4 Huey missile, has been upgraded to the Long March 5-DY. Lehao has already described the upgrade as a way to improve the performance of lunar missions. China also needs a next-generation lunar lander and spacecraft capable of space missions.

However, the use of existing missiles, which have already been launched seven times, simplifies the task for China. Although the country's aerospace engineers are in the early stages of developing an ultra-heavy lift rocket called Long March 9, they likely won't be ready for test flights before 2030. By modifying the current rocket, China could reach the moon faster.

This only adds to the idea that NASA and China are competing with the Moon. The United States created the "Artemis Plan" to return to the moon. While the program has a symbolic date for a human landing in 2024, it seems impossible due to the lack of a lunar landing, a spacesuit, and other technical problems. The year 2026 appears to be the earliest possible date for a moon landing, and of course it could come right in.

Both countries are also looking for international partners. The United States has already added twelve signatories to the Artemis Agreement, which include Australia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. China has agreed with Russia to build a lunar research station and is also looking for European partners. Read more about why throwing China around the moon matters

Mike Griffin, a former NASA administrator under George W. Bush, has long warned US policymakers that China could speed up its plans for the moon and defeat NASA with its current weight. Rocket lift. "They never seem to be in a hurry. They seem to be playing a long game. So I'm not saying they'll be on the moon for another six to eight years, but if and when they want to." They can't go back to the moon, their return to the moon is ridiculous. "

China is in a hurry now.
