The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the tests cannot detect infection. But if the result is positive, you are probably infected. People with Covid-19 can get out of isolation sooner without a test.
The CDC last week updated its guidance on isolation and quarantine periods. Reduce the isolation period for those infected from 10 days to five days, if symptoms are or have disappeared by then, and if they wear a mask for up to five days after that. It is noteworthy that the agency did not follow the recommendation that individuals be tested after five days and end up in isolation only if they obtained a negative result early.

Experts quickly criticized the omission. It is vital to them. Safely shortening the isolation period Dr Michael Mina, an epidemiologist and advocate of rapid testing at Harvard University, called the move "reckless" and virologist Angela Rasmussen called the agency's argument "nonsense".

test Test

The CDC has done it. He also argues that the decision is supported by science, particularly data showing that the majority of transmissions occur one or two days before symptoms appear and two to three days after. But critics were quick to point out that the infectious data came mainly from earlier types of coronavirus — not the Omicron-dominated kind that can be highly transmitted now. And although most transmissions may happen early, a large number of people will still be infectious after that window.

Surprisingly, the CDC agrees. Amid strong reactions to the updated guidelines, the defense agency published its position on its website on Tuesday. The explanation was that a typical UK study found that "after the fifth day after a positive test, about 31% of people remain infected". The CDC highlighted this finding to explain why it is recommended that people wear masks for five days after leaving isolation early. The CDC argues that rapid tests are not designed to show levels of infection, but only indicate the presence or absence of infection. "These are no small tests," Rochelle Valensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said at a White House meeting on Wednesday. "They are qualitative tests for the diagnosis." He later explained that "these tests are for qualitative rather than quantitative purposes - which means we cannot say on the basis of a positive or negative test how transferable you are."

In an interview with CNN last week Walinsky explained: So what we said was good, if you did a quick test in five days and it was negative, we weren't sure you couldn't be transferred yet. We didn't want to leave a false sense of security. We still want you to wear a mask. And if that's the case, we still know that your maximum send rate was behind you. Home tests tend to identify which parts of the SARS-CoV-2 virus are protected and provide a reasonable indication of the amount of virus particles in your airway - and therefore how infected you are.

The more viruses in the airway, the higher the likelihood of an antigen-positive result. This means that - easily - there is a high degree of overlap between the period of peak infection and the period during which an antigen-based test is likely to produce a positive result.

Add More Confusion A perspective on rapid testing, the CDC published in its online defense Tuesday a section titled "Why Doesn't the CDC Need Testing at the End of Isolation?" The agency says that if a person "has access to testing and wants to be tested," they can do so around day five. “If you test positive, you should continue to isolate for 10 days” because “a positive antigen test may mean that a person has left a transmissible virus and could infect others.”
