Why it matters: If you're considering upgrading to Alder Lake and want to take your current cooler with you, make sure it works with your LGA 1700 motherboard—especially if it's the Asus Mobo that's having problems with larger cooling products. Brands, though, are free compatibility kits.

Guru3D reports that the manufacturer of the Noctua cooler has updated their compatibility list to indicate that some of their coolers are not compatible or there may be problems with some Asus Z690 and B660 motherboards that weren't released after.

Some of the most popular Noctua products, including the NH-D15, NH-U12S and NH-U12A, have been shown to be incompatible with the entire Asus ROG STRIX Z690 series and some of its motherboards. The B660 line has not been released.

Most of the problems are due to the high heat sink covering the VRMs, which makes the cooling combination and the motherboard mechanically incompatible. One board, the Z690-G Gaming WIFI, is having trouble because the cooling is in the top PCIe x16 slot, preventing owners from using the Gen 5 slot, and some mobos are still being evaluated.

Noctua. They were one of the first companies to introduce Alder Lake LGA 1700 CPU mounting kits to their coolers, but it seems some Asus boards still have compatibility issues.

Limited to Noctua coolers. Both be silent! The Arctic released their compatibility lists. In the first case, many Asus motherboards are mechanically incompatible due to their design. There are also mobs where installed coolers can interfere with memory.

Arctic Cooling says there are compatibility issues with Line II liquid-freeze. However, the company notes that removing the water pump's PCB cover that interferes with the VRM heatsink (on some motherboards) solves the problem. This solution does not adversely affect the coolant itself.
