"Dreams did not make us kings. Dragons."
HBO released the first teaser for House of the Dragon and showed us our first real look at the Game of Thrones spin-off series. Set 200 years before its events, this series marks the beginning of the end of the Targaryen dynasty, which culminated in the Civil War. In addition to co-writers George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condall, Miguel Sabo née Nick, who has filmed some of the most exciting and complex battles in Game of Thrones, will co-direct and direct the pilot and many other episodes. Filming for the series began in April.
This time, the main source for Martin's epic 2018 fantasy, Fire and Blood, is the fictional history of the Targaryen Kings. It begins with the conquest of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros by Egon I, due to his advanced weapons in the form of a dragon, followed by a period of relative peace. The third part focuses on the sons of Aegon I, King Anis I, and King Maigor I. When the latter died, Anis's son, Jaharis I, ascended the Iron Throne. I had two sons, but they died before their royal father, as a result of which the succession crisis began.Read more How Fire, how much Blood: Predivals for GoT prequel House of the Dragon
The last two episodes of Fire and Blood deal with the fallout from that crisis, and the main source for this new release appears to be Dynasty. Essentially, the House of Lords selects King Viserys I Targaryen to succeed Jahres I, through Princess Rennes Philaerion, a female dragon known as the "Queen That Never Was". Viserys has no son by his first wife and decides that his daughter, Princess Rainiera Targaryen, should succeed him. But this is Westeros, so others are plotting to get the Iron Throne, chief among them Ser Otto Hightower, the king's hand - his daughter Alicent became the king's second wife - and Prince Daemon Targaryen, the king's younger brother.Advertising
We don't get much detail from this first teaser, but it does give us a good sense of the overall look and feel. A quick look at the cast sees Paddy Candeen as King Viserys I. But Darcy as the older version of Rhaenyra (Millie Alcock plays the younger version); Olivia Cooke as Mrs. Aliscent Hightower; The eleventh physician, Matt Smith, as Prince Damon; Rhys Evans as Sir Otto Hightower; Steve Tucson as Lord Corliss Flareon, better known as "The Eel"; Eve Post as Renice Villarion. The cast also includes Sonoya Mizuno as Misaria, a foreign dancer. Fabian Frankl as Sir Creston Cole, born in Darnish, a swordsman. Graham Matawish as Sir Harold Westerling, a member of the Royal Guard accused of protecting Rinera. Ryan Core as Sir Harvin Strong, the most powerful man in the Seven Kingdoms; Jefferson Hall is an identical twin of Lord Jason and Sir Lannister of Thailand (the twins apparently run in the Lannister bloodline); David Horowitz as Grand Maester Milos; Bill Patterson as Lord Lyman Beesbury, the lord of coins; Gwen plays the powerful Lord Lionel Harnhall.
What the teaser can't tell us is whether Sapu nee Nick and Kundal can restore the magic of the original Game of Thrones and avoid the problems of later seasons. A huge fan following, at least this time around, the models are not outdone by the books. However, Fire and Blood received mixed reviews, with some criticizing the dry narration style (one critic called it "endless arbitrary nonsense") and others a "masterpiece", praising "folk historical stories". As Annie Bundel wrote for Ars in 2019, "It should probably be said that every time a new chapter or series of Game of Thrones is created: the gods throw a coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it goes down."
Dragon House is set to air on HBO Max next year. The official teaser for House of the Dragon, coming to HBO Max in 2020.
