Essentially, there were two GT classes, the GT1 and GT2. The GT1 cars were more refined, more powerful, produced more aerodynamic power, and were more expensive to run. In the end, they became too expensive and disappeared. GT2 survived and was renamed GTE at Le Mans and renamed to GTLM at IMSA (because it made sense to have a GT2 class but not a GT1 class even for a pointlessly complex sport like endurance racing).

It was in the past. For several years now, the same problem that plagued the GT1 has plagued the GTLM/GTE. Cars became more specialized - Porsche, for example, struggled to build a mid-engine 911 race car. This has made their campaign more expensive, especially for the more special teams that are the lifeblood of the sport. This class was created specifically for amateurs, even to the point of mandatory driver assistance such as anti-lock brakes. Differences in performance between different vehicles are adjusted to maintain a relatively uniform playing field (known as BoP), resulting in entire networks in races around the world.
