This technology uses less water to bring the battery temperature down to normal, so it jumps off the sidelines and crashes. According to an investigation report from the National Transportation Safety Board, the vehicle crashed into a drain hole and a prominent fender hatch and was then stopped by a tree. At that point, Tesla caught fire immediately.

Further study of the deadly Tesla Model S crash is unlikely to include autopilot, according to the NTSB. It took the firefighters four hours to extinguish the flame, in part because the battery was still ablaze. When the fire was finally extinguished, about 30,000 gallons of water was poured on it—something the office would normally use within a month.

Electric vehicle fires are not common, but they differ enough from fossil fuel vehicle fires that firefighters need new approaches. A company in Europe has created a container-like box that can hold a burning electric car and blow it up with water from all sides. But it does require a dedicated truck, which makes it an expensive addition to the fire department.

But next year, firefighters will have another option: a high-pressure nozzle that can be placed under a burning vehicle delivery. Direct water for batteries The Austrian company Rosenbauer, which makes fire engines and other equipment, says it has successfully tested the devices on a variety of battery designs, including bag, prism and drum cells. Most electric cars place their batteries flat and low in the chassis, allowing you to have a spacious interior and a low center of gravity that uses control. But when there is a fire there is a lot of compound between the battery and any water being sprayed on it, which is a traditional method.

The new device allows firefighters to respond to a battery fire. To use the water more efficiently and hope the fire goes out faster first the firefighters make sure nothing else is burning on the car (seats, tires, etc). The device is then pulled under the battery before moving about 25 feet toward the control box. Finally, they activate a "perforated nozzle" that strikes the battery pack to deliver water directly into the cells.

ReadingGM continues All Chevy screws that made recalls blame LG for faulty batteries. Rosen Power said of the technology last year that roughly 260 to 1,000 gallons (1,000 to 4,000 liters) of water were required to bring a flame-retardant battery pack to a safe temperature. That's nearly double what Texas firefighters need to put out a Model S in April.

If the vehicle is on its side or roof, or if there is not enough space under the vehicle, firefighters can expose the device to the interior of the vehicle or in a subsection—anything that gives them safe access to the battery. The nozzle can also be attached to the vehicle while towing so that firefighters can quickly reach it if the battery is re-ignited.
