Why it matters: Maynard Handley, a former Apple QuickTime developer, has released a preliminary analysis of the Apple M1 system on a chip (SoC). Handley hopes his research will help others spend less time inventing the wheel and more time learning the next generation of Apple devices.

If you remember, in the middle of 2020, Apple announced plans to switch to custom ARM-based silicon. The first systems equipped with the new M1 SoC arrived just in time for the holidays and were pretty impressive in terms of performance and performance compared to traditional Intel and AMD x86 CPUs. This approach makes people outside the Apple ecosystem unenthusiastic about the M1 SoC, as it only works with Apple OS.
