https://safirsoft.com Imagine patenting an Apple Watch without a digital crown

The digital Crown has been a key component of the Apple Watch since its first release in 2015. The digital Crown, modeled after a traditional Watch crown, is a physical button that can be pressed or rotated to help navigate watchOS. However, if a recent patent idea finds its way into the final product, future versions could be submitted with an optical sensor instead of the digital crown.

In a recent patent application, Apple envisions implementing a Watch with an optical sensor in place of the digital crown. As Apple Patently points out, this sensor can be used to guide controls and assist with biometrics.

An important concern is whether or not the motion controls are reliable enough, to replace a device. Physical buttons, especially those with a history of having a crown on a traditional watch. Gesture controls always seem a little sly — Apple wants to gamble on a Watch for a trick?

What do you think? Should Apple ditch the digital crown and make its smartwatch a little simpler, or is it a feature that Cupertino isn't dealing with?
