Tesla owes Owen Diaz $137 million after a jury found that a former black worker had been subjected to racist abuse that the electric car company didn't pay enough attention to during his tenure.

Diaz, an elevator operator at the Fremont plant for nine months from 2015 to 2016, was known to be racing by colleagues, told to "go back to Africa" ​​and saw racist graffiti in the bathroom. The trial lasted just over a week, and the jury found that Tesla had not taken reasonable steps to prevent racial harassment. But the federal jury did not accept the argument. In all of the plaintiff's lawsuits, the company ordered Tesla to pay $6.9 million in damages and $130 million in damages to Diaz, far more than his attorneys requested.

After about four hours of deliberation, a group of eight members of the jury made their decision.

Arbitration Rulings in Question

Other workers, such as Melvin Berry, have been forced to pass judgment. In Barry's case, a judge found that Tesla had failed to prevent racial discrimination at its Fremont factory, as his supervisors called him racist. However, in part because Barry's case was brought to trial, the penalty was much lower - only $1 million.
