The new model indicates that a massive impact inside the moon has shaken it and changed its volcano.

Ongoing orbital collisions form a stream. The magma ocean leaves the body fluids. This should allow the ingredients to blend together evenly to form an almost uniform body. But with the advent of space exploration, we're finally able to get a good look at the moon.

It turns out the look was very different from the one we're used to, with dark areas called mares dominating the land. These differences are also reflected in the chemical composition of the rocks on different sides. If the bubble rock mixed well once throughout the month, how did such a big difference come about? A new study has linked this difference to the largest craters on the Moon. When we put a spacecraft into orbit around the Moon, we weren't aware that it was there. The only thing we can see from the ground are some of the bulges that are part of the outer opening wall. The crater itself extends more than 2,500 kilometers around the moon.

The crater was apparently formed after the magmatic ocean period, based on the fact that its properties have froze since the impact. But it's also very old and could have formed before many of the volcanic features we can see up close. Interestingly, the highest concentrations of volcanic hippos are found in the near north - roughly on the far side of the Moon from their impact. Can they be linked together?

It is clear that a shock of this magnitude could generate a lot of heat on the Moon and could affect the convective transmission or even start over. But it is not clear if this caused a volcano to form at the crash site.

To better understand the situation, a team of Chinese researchers has built a model of the interior of the Moon. This model combines software that can simulate the impact with models from inside the Moon that can take into account heating, additional forcing materials and the gravitational effect of the surrounding Earth. ad

Strong Shock

As expected, the model shows that the heat from the collision resumes convection inside the Moon. But it does not start evenly. This is because the body that created the crater pumps a lot of material into the moon, and this material gradually spreads out in all directions from the point of impact. For much of the Moon, this disrupts regulated convection.

This regulated convection is what allows warmer, deeper material to reach the surface and pull cooler material from the surface. The end result is that the hot, deep material makes its way closer to the surface on the other side of the hole. On the Moon, it also contains higher concentrations of radioactive isotopes that keep it warm for longer periods of time, resulting in the long volcanic eruption that mares create.

Not every effect has this effect. . If the angle of impact is too small, the material distribution will not be wide enough to create significant asymmetry. And the details of the asymmetry are as delicate as the shock absorption and the viscosity of the material you inject into the moon.

This kind of complex mechanism obviously takes a lot of things to go well. So researchers may want to re-examine this using independent convective models. The authors of this study suggest that looking at rocks near the nearby Chang'e-5 landing site may give us a greater sense of the composition of the material that erupted there.

But as the authors point out, since there are many competing models to explain the asymmetry, we have to wait for scientists to compare models to see if there are clear differences in what they produce. Hence we have to see if we can reasonably expect to receive relevant evidence from the Moon.
