What to expect: An international team of astronomers has observed for the first time light from behind a black hole. Future observatories, such as the Advanced High Energy Astrophysics Telescope (Athens), should provide high-resolution images with much shorter viewing times.

Led by Dan Wilkins of Stanford University, the team focused on a black hole 10 million times the mass of our sun, located 1,800 million light-years away in a galaxy called I Zwicky. The astronomers, equipped with the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton space telescopes and NASA's NuSTAR, observed glowing tongues of X-rays coming from around the black hole. X-rays of gas falling into the black hole echoed, and as the flames receded, telescopes were miraculously able to pick up smaller X-ray sparks of different colors. These were echoes from the gas behind the black hole. "The black hole reaffirmed Einstein's general theory of relativity," Wilkins said. "Every light entering that black hole does not go out, so we shouldn't be able to see beyond the black hole." "The reason we can see it is because the black hole is shining in space, the light bends and the magnetic fields rotate around it," he added. / p>

This is the first time that astronomers have seen light directly behind a black hole, and it also agrees with Einstein's theory of general relativity and reconfirms his predictions.

The research team's findings were recently published in the scientific journal Nature.
