Why it matters: The Nubia RedMagic 6 series has already broken two smartphone records with a brutal 18GB of RAM and a 165Hz screen with a 360Hz touch sampling rate. Its replacement is to take things to the next level with improved performance, haptic responsiveness, plus a new active cooling system and an under-display fingerprint sensor that cheats it all.
After the Asus ROG Phone 5 hit the market earlier this year, now is the time for the ZTE Nubia brand to launch a flagship gaming phone. This is the RedMagic 6S Pro, and while it doesn't stray from the original RedMagic 6's design, it does come with new tweaks and tweaks.
However, that's not what sets this phone apart from the countless Android phones available today. A unique feature is the new ICE 7.0 cooling system, which uses phase-changing materials to absorb heat quickly and release heat slowly over time. If you choose the Red Magic 6S Pro with a transparent back, it does so with the help of a small fan with RGB light.
The 6.8 inch AMOLED display can support up to 700 bright colors and support full DCI-P3 color gamut. This is the same 165Hz panel found in the RedMagic 6 Pro and capable of 120Hz, 90Hz and 60Hz modes, but this time the touch digitizer has a sampling rate of 720Hz — double that of the previous flagship. The Nubia carries two shoulder triggers that operate at 450 Hz for touch sampling and has a response time of 2.2 milliseconds. There is now a new launcher on the back of the phone that enables you to configure custom actions using RedMagic tools. As of this writing, the only games that support shoulder launchers are Genshin Impact and LoL: Wild Rift, while Real Racing, Vainglory, and Dead Trigger 2 can only run at a fullscreen refresh rate of 165Hz.
An interesting new trick on the new phone is that the fingerprint reader at the bottom of the screen can also measure your heart rate. However, this is not for health monitoring purposes - the idea is to make it more difficult to trick the sensor, which is a nice improvement.
Otherwise the rest of the features are a carbon copy of what was inside. The 6 Pro rear camera module has a 64MP main camera and a depth sensor, while the front camera has a 6MP+ sensor. The international model 6S Pro has a 5,050mAh battery that can be fully charged in just over an hour, while the Chinese model has a smaller 4,500mAh unit. If you need faster charging, Nubia also sells a 66W charger separately.
For those using wired headphones, a 3.5mm audio jack runs on the top and a USB-C port. The bottom supports the display port to connect to an external monitor.
