There have been many rumors in recent months about Apple trying to discard Samsung-made displays. In 2020, there were some reports of the use of screens made by the Chinese company BOE for the iPhone 12 series, and apparently some of these phones have reached users with the old screens of this company. It is estimated that about 10 to 20% of the iPhone 12 and 13 series phones use BOE screens.

It should be noted that so far Apple has only used BOE screens only to a limited extent on standard iPhone models. . Now, according to a new report, apparently in 2023, part of the old iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max panels may be supplied by the company. Most of the old iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max panels are currently supplied by Samsung, and of course LG also supplies a small part of these panels. These phones use LTPO display, which technology can significantly save energy thanks to its variable refresh capability.

Apparently, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will once again use a 120Hz display with variable refresh capability. It is said that although BOE has not been able to attract Apple to supply the screens of the more expensive iPhone 14 models, it will continue to supply part of the panels of the two cheaper models. With regard to the iPhone 14 Pro Pro models, it should be noted that Apple intends to remove the screen cutout and use the hollow screen instead.

LTPO What is it? ?

The term LTPO stands for Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, which refers to a special type of technology behind the back of old displays. Old technology also stands for organic light emitting diode, which in simple terms, in this type of display, each of the pixels can create the necessary light. The old display works without backlight because the pixels do not need separate light. LCD monitors, on the other hand, always need backlighting. This difference in performance makes the old monitors consume less power. Older displays typically use LTPS or low-temperature polycrystalline silicon technology for the back.

The importance of the LTPO display lies in the fact that it does not require additional components between the display controller and the GPU to provide variable rate refresh. Monitors based on LTPS technology can only offer two refresh rates, such as 60 and 120 Hz. But as we said, LTPO technology offers a lot of variety in this area, and for example, the Galaxy S21 Ultra display can bring refresh rates between 1 and 120 Hz, which is an important advantage.

Advantages and disadvantages of LTPO monitors

The most important advantage These displays are a matter of increasing battery life. Although the old monitors are generally very energy efficient, turning off and on each of the pixels means consuming battery power. But in LTPO displays, intelligent algorithms can detect fixed parts and significantly increase battery life by increasing the refresh rate to just 1 Hz. When you scroll, the screen refresh rate reaches 120 Hz very quickly, which provides an attractive user experience.

The most important problem with these screens is their high price. In the past, LTPO and IGZO displays required larger pixels and therefore could not provide much higher resolution, but now this problem has been resolved and production costs are the only negative feature of this type of display.
