https://safirsoft.com The Linux Foundation says companies lean on open source talent

A 2021 survey shows that 97% of hiring managers prioritize free and open source software careers.

The Linux Foundation released its 2021 Open Source Jobs Report this month, which aims to keep both parties informed of current IT employment trends. The report accurately predicts many of its results in the first paragraph, explaining: “The talent gap widened before the outbreak of the epidemic due to the accelerated absorption of local clouds due to the progress of remote work.” In other words, Kubernetes and AWS experts are lucky enough to buy the job.

The organization surveyed nearly 200 hiring managers and 750 open source professionals to find out which skills — and dozens of resource-appropriate resources — are most in demand. According to the report, college degree requirements are declining, but IT certification requirements and/or preferences are growing — and for the first time, “cloud-native” skills (such as managing Kubernetes) are in greater demand than traditional ones. Linux skills. Kubernetes, Docker, or similar computing classes without the traditional operating system below. In theory, any traditional operating system could be the basis of a native cloud stack - but in practice, Linux is essentially what the clouds are made of. “Cloud computing, DevOps, Linux, and security clearly have the most promising opportunities,” said Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation. DevOps itself—which combines system administration and software development into one integrated role—has become the norm rather than the exception. The survey found that 88% of all open source professionals now use DevOps principles, up from 44% just three years ago.

While the insights in the Open Source Jobs Report are great, it's worth noting that the Linux Foundation isn't a hardly uninterested party — the laser focus on open source skills and the certifications it highlights. These are not really unexpected results from an organization that is dedicated to open source and offers many professional certifications.

The full report is available on the Linux Foundation and can be downloaded without registration.
