The main cause of worldwide power outages appears to be the BGP track update.

Facebook - And apparently all the major services Facebook owns - are down today. We first noticed the problem around 11:30 AM ET, when some Facebook links were broken. A simple additional investigation revealed major DNS failures on Facebook:

This issue runs deeper than Facebook's DNS crashes. Facebook, which is owned by Facebook, was also down, and its DNS services, hosted on Amazon rather than on its own Facebook network, were up and running. Instagram and WhatsApp were available, but HTTP 503 (No server available for request) showed an error instead, indicating that while DNS was working and service balancing was available, the application servers that should be fed to load balancers were not.

Shortly thereafter, Cloudflare VP Dane Knecht reported that all BGP paths had been extended to Facebook. Without BGP paths to Facebook, Facebook's DNS servers are inaccessible - like the missing app servers for Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus VR owned by Facebook.

. Facebook DNS and other services are down. It looks like their BGP tracks have been removed from the internet. Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 suffered a huge defeat in the last 20 minutes.

Shortly after that, Reddit user u/ramenporn in subreddit r/sysadmin reported that BGP appeared to be due to a configuration change shortly before the shutdown started, syncing with Facebook.

According to u/ramenporn - who claims to be a Facebook employee and part of the recovery effort - this is likely a case of the "[config] push that shut me down". This means that the repair must be from data center technicians who have local physical access and the required routers. The reports do not appear to have been the result of any malicious attack on Facebook's infrastructure.
