What happened? Unity Technologies, the maker of the Unity game engine, is set to acquire Peter Jackson Weta Digital, the Academy Award-winning digital effects company best known for its work on The Lord of the Rings films, for $1.625 billion.

Weta Digital, a company separate from Weta Workshop, was founded by Jackson in 1993. The company has worked on some of the biggest movies and TV shows of recent decades, including Avatar. Avengers franchise, Game of Thrones and LotR. Under this deal, Unity will acquire Weta Digital's artist tools, major pipeline, intellectual property and engineering talent.

Weta's business in visual effects will continue as a separate company called WetaFX. Jackson will continue to own a majority stake in the entity, which is expected to become a major customer of Unity. New Zealand Tools.

Unity writes that Weta's digital asset library will inherit urban and natural environments, plants and animals, humans, man-made objects, materials, textures, and more. As the WetaFX VFX team continues to work on film and television productions, additional assets will be added. In addition to the assets added to its engine, Unity eventually intends to offer the tools that you get with a cloud-based subscription.

"Together, Unity and Weta Digital can pave the way for any artist," Jackson said in a statement. "The industry can use these incredibly powerful and creative tools."
