What happened? Texas Instruments has announced that it is building 300mm wafer plants in Sherman, Texas to meet the growing demand for semiconductors worldwide. Construction of the first two plants will begin in 2022, with plans to build a total of four plants over time.

New Texas Instruments factories create many jobs, expand the company's chip manufacturing operations in the United States, and increase production of 300 mm chips. If Texas Instruments fills the four factory jobs, the semiconductor maker expects to create 3,000 direct jobs and invest about $30 billion. semiconductors around the world, resulting in a persistent shortage of global chips that has decimated the technology and automotive industries. However, the first phablets should only be available online in 2025, so their products don't contribute much to the current problem, but such situations should be avoided in the future.

"The Millimeter Mills at the Sherman site are part of TI's over 90 years and this decision is a testament to our strong participation and investment in the Sherman community," said Rich Templeton, Chairman, Chairman and CEO of TI.

In addition to the Texas plants, T.I. recently purchased a former Micron 3D XPoint fab (LFAB) in Lehi, Utah for $900 million. Production began early 2023.

Along with Together with Texas Instruments, Samsung also plans to build a $17 billion semiconductor wafer plant in Texas. This plant targets 5nm.
