What to expect: Just weeks after Western Digital released its first 20TB hard drive, its CEO spoke at a conference where he revealed some of his future plans. It includes details about the technology Western Digital intends to use in the future to increase storage capacity.

At this week's Wells Fargo TMT annual meeting, one of the topics covered by Western Digital CEO David Guckler was the company's approach to technologies like OptiNAND, SRM, and HAMR. Guckler considers all three to increase compression and access to larger hard drives.

Last year, Seagate shipped 20 TB hard drives that use HAMR to select data center clients. Last month, WD released 20TB OptiNAND flash drives, which use flash memory to store metadata to the general consumer (sold out now).

“We have invested heavily in HAMR. HAMR is going to be real and it will be in the future,” Goekler said for several years.

Both WD and Seagate want to hit 30 TB by mid-decade, and Seagate plans to increase it to 100 TB by 2030. Guckler thinks WD now has springboards. You can Getting there with ePMR (energy-saving storage), SMR (another way to increase density) and OptiNAND.

“I think SMR is getting more realistic and customers are getting more realistic about it. Be.” The WD president said one such move could be a 22TB hard drive in 2022. WD's current high-capacity hard drive uses nine graphics cards with 2.2TB per plate. Goeckeler says they can release one with the 10th plate. /p>

One technology that Goeckeler did not mention is MAMR. Western Digital introduced this technology in 2017 and said it could make 40TB hard drives possible by 2025.
