https://safirsoft.com TSMC received $4 billion from customers to store future production capacity

The big picture: TSMC, the world's largest foundry, announced in its latest financial report that it accepted an unprecedented amount in advance for its future production capacity this year. We hope that this money will speed up the construction of new equipment for the processors. As general PC manufacturers continue to fail to deliver hardware to consumers, attention has been directed to foundries to find long-term solutions to chip shortages.

In the past, the main way TSMC allowed customers to reserve capacity was through "guaranteed deposits", which are refunded once the customer's order is completed. p>

TSMC continues to accept secured deposits. In fact, about two-thirds of the NT$642 (US$23) secured deposits have been paid out in the past nine months. But this year, the company focused on "interim receipts" for future capacity, which are actually prepayments. Signed.

This money is not available to TSMC as long as it does not comply with the "Terms and Conditions of Contracts" with its customers, and thus the rules of how it is spent there. But the idea is that TSMC will use it to build more production capacity for customers to buy.

The TSMC report does not disclose details of the agreements and does not identify the clients. At one guess, Apple is probably the biggest, which uses TSMC for all its iPhone and Mac processors. AMD could be close behind. Last month, AMD announced that it has paid $355 million up front this year for various castings. Qualcomm may also be present.

Neither Intel nor Nvidia currently rely heavily on TSMC, but it appears that both have spoken to the foundry about building the next generation of GPUs. In the future, TSMC may be the sole supplier of GPU chips.
