What happened? Seagate unveiled a hard drive that connects via NVMe at the Open Computing Project (OCP) global summit this week. Limiting a faster PCIe connection to the speed of a spinning drive may make sense, but it can still have benefits beyond the consumer desktop.

Seagate provides details of the project on its blog, including how it works and potential benefits. There is also a separate document that goes into more detail on the specifications. Seagate plans to make it available to customers in the coming years. The hard drive uses native NVMe ports, but Seagate says it has "Tri-Mode" SAS, SATA, and NVMe receivers.

Seagate plans to make it available to "key customers" in September 2022 with wider availability. For single and dual port models in mid-2024.

The idea of an NVMe hard drive can seem strange. Consumers are moving from hard drives to solid state drives because solid state technology can read and transfer data faster. Moving to a storage connection for motherboards via NVMe instead of SATA increases the speed. Using an NVMe connection to a hard drive may not offer any speed advantage over it, and in fact Seagate's explanation doesn't mention the drive's performance at all.

Instead, Seagate claims that the main advantages are cost and simplicity, especially for servers and workstations, which may still use a lot of hard drives because they are cheaper per gigabyte than an SSD. Moving from SATA to NVMe means fewer moving parts, making drives more cost-effective and less prone to failure. Seagate also says that these drives may be easier to scale and consume less power.
