Apple's M1 series chips have been impressed with their performance and energy efficiency, so Qualcomm is looking to offer a similar solution for Windows laptops. The chip maker says it expects the first commercial devices equipped with the new chip to hit the market in 2023.

MediaTek is slowly eroding Qualcomm's share of the mobile chip market, but the latter is not a concern. Qualcomm is more interested in building laptop processors that can compete with Intel, AMD and Apple processors.

During Investor Day 2021, the chip maker announced that its next generation SoC-based SoC is active. The track will be launched in 2023. Dr. James Thompson, chief technology officer of Qualcomm, said the new chip is "designed to benchmark the performance of Windows PCs" and offers similar value to Apple's M-Series chips.

Qualcomm New Silicon is being developed by Nuvia, which it bought earlier this year for $1.4 billion. The Nuvia team is led by three former Apple employees who previously worked on the A-series chipset for iPhone and iPad. Prior to joining Qualcomm, Nuvia had been testing a prototype of its "Phoenix" CPU cores, which were apparently able to deliver twice as much as the most efficient x86 CPU cores for laptops in a 4.5W power package.

Apple's M-Series chipsets also require a more powerful graphics processor. Qualcomm says it will leverage Adreno's graphic design to deliver desktop-class gaming performance on laptops. The chip maker also promises stable battery performance compared to the Apple M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets.

Qualcomm plans to release prototypes of new chips to PC makers next year, and expects to produce the first prototype of this chip. Equipped devices will be launched in 2023.
