The big picture: Perhaps the biggest challenge for augmented and virtual reality is immersion, or tricking the human mind into believing that what you are experiencing is real. Mastering the audio and visual elements of Metavars is relatively simple, but mixing on contact is more challenging.

Facebook ... Meta, for the past seven years—perhaps since the maker of the $2 billion Oculus VR virtual reality headset in 2014—has been developing gloves capable of making sense. Communicate with the virtual world... er, metaverses. This week, the company provided updates on its progress.

A research team from Meta Reality Labs addressed the problem directly. First of all, they create new soft actuators that generate less heat than existing mechanical catalysts. It is powered by a microfluidic processor that controls the airflow of the moving actuators. Together, these innovations allow the meta to fit more catalysts into the gloves, and hopefully make them comfortable enough for long-term use.

Another major element that the Metavars touch is the hand. Meta Tracking said it's developing advanced hand-tracking technology that allows the system to determine the exact location of your hand in a virtual scene, whether it's in contact with a virtual object, and exactly how your hand is touching that object.

Meanwhile, the touch display will be responsible for feeding all this information to the triggers on the gauntlet.

Mitta said the gauntlet project started as moonlight, but it has become. It is increasingly possible over time. It's still in the early stages of development, but it definitely looks more appealing than using chemicals on the skin to stimulate the senses.
