Sony struggled to compete with Microsoft's "smart delivery" system. This allows users to purchase an Xbox game once and play it on whatever system they have. This is much easier than the complicated upgrade methods and confusing pre-order packages, which PlayStation seems to welcome.
Last week, Sony revealed pre-order options for Horizon Forbidden West. Unfortunately, other players don't seem to be buying the PS4 version. Instead, Sony has recommended that if customers want to get the game for both platforms, they have to buy Digital Deluxe ($80), Collector ($200) or Regalia ($260). This goes against what Sony promised ahead of the PlayStation 5's release. Even if they opt for the cheaper option (Digital Deluxe), players will pay an extra $20 for the PS5 version if they plan to play on the road.
However, Sony backed down over the weekend. Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in an update to the initial announcement that the company had "lost the mark." /pZhzetkMsy pic.twitter.com/oWNiOlj9Ru- Dependent Lover Basically (HDawgGaming) September 3, 2021
"Thursday was supposed to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing guerrilla squad they're trying to deliver." February 2022, Ryan wrote. “However, it is quite clear that the offers we agreed to at the beginning of our pre-order have lost their mark.” Ryan explained that Sony initially intended to upgrade first-person shooter titles for free, but the pandemic was widespread. Despite this failure, Sony respects its original offer. Anyone who buys the standard PS4 version will upgrade to the PS5 version for free. There is no doubt that fan reaction and negative press coverage have had a huge impact in changing Sony's image. With HFW, for example, the only way to upgrade at full price without repurchasing was to pay another $20 up front for the Digital Deluxe edition.
Why is there no free PS5 edition for PS4 editions of Horizon Forbidden West unless I purchase certain editions? I understand the upgrade from OG Ghost Of Tsushima to Director's Cut but that's ridiculous pic.twitter.com/GqhODyFMNs- Jacob D. #Sora4Smash (@Mega_Mii51) Sep 2, 2021
Ryan is worried about that from now In, players can upgrade to any of Sony's next generation games for $10, including God of War and Gran Turismo 7-dimensional Gran Turismo. This offer applies to both physical and digital versions of Sony Interactive Entertainment games. PlayStation 5 games generally cost $70 compared to $60 for a PS4. Therefore, customers pay the difference to get the PS5 version.
This announcement appears to have been an unnecessary public outcry. Unfortunately, it was met with negative fan reaction and negative pressure to force Sony to see it.
