OnePlus' choice not to sell the $969 version raises the price by $100.

The global chip shortage is another casualty.

Android Police have reported that OnePlus has canceled the base OnePlus 9 Pro model for the US. During announcing the phone in March 2021, OnePlus said that the device will start at $969 for a version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, but the model is not available. Instead, the phone is priced higher in the US, with the $1,069 version only coming with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of US storage.

OnePlus started selling the $1,069 SKU on time in April, but the $969 version hasn't gone on sale in the US nor is it up for pre-order. OnePlus made the following statement to Android Police:

The OnePlus 9 Pro 8x128 GB version is originally set for sale in North America for $969. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen constraints on the specific supply of North American hardware, we recently concluded that this configuration can no longer be provided to the United States and Canada. In North America, we prioritize the 12x256GB version to ensure users reach the highest specifications.

OnePlus claims that OnePlus 9 Pro is a more "priority" indicating that it is a choice by the company. OnePlus promised a $969 phone and now prefers not to plug it in. The company could certainly supply the right RAM and memory chips and sell both models for a shortage, but instead, the lack of chips seems to be an excuse to lure customers into expensive phones. This is the second time OnePlus has changed the deal it promised when launching OnePlus 9. After the launch, the company encountered malicious devices while running popular apps like Chrome. The company said it was trying to preserve battery life, which is a worthy goal, but it did so by blocking some apps from accessing the quad-core processor. A report by Anandtech found that Chrome was 85 to 75 percent lower than normal in some tests. On the plus side, OnePlus increased the 9 Pro's support window to three years of operating system updates and four years of security updates.
