Intel's desktop processor series receives an overhaul with new 12th generation chipsets

Alder Lake Core i5, Core i3, Pentium, and Celeron processors complete the line.

Intel released its first 12th generation desktop processors over two months ago, and we were impressed with the results. Chips still consume a lot of energy, but in general they have a function to back them up. Today, Intel announces the rest of its product line, including non-overclocked versions of its Core i9, i7, and i5 processors. New Core i3, Pentium, and Celeron chips that bring Alder Lake architecture to PCs. And low-power versions of the processors are suitable for small computers and other systems with high space and cooling capacity.

Today Intel introduces a total of 22 new CPUs, and it replaces most new processors. One of the company's 11th and 10th generation desktop processors is currently available. Like the currently available K and KF series overclockable processors, these chipsets require a new motherboard with a LGA 1700 socket and can support DDR4 or DDR5 depending on which motherboard you buy (more on that).

All of these processors are based on the Intel 7 process, formerly known as "Advanced Super Fin 10nm". Intel justifies the rebranding by saying that the density of the Intel 7 transistor is similar to the brand's 7 nm manufacturing processes from competitors such as TSMC and Samsung. The 12th-generation Core is the first time in about six and a half years that Intel has surpassed some 14nm versions of desktop processors.

Some newer processors use the Intel Embedded processor architecture. Which provides performance and performance cores (P and E cores) for better power efficiency when the computer is not overcrowded, and provides better multi-core performance when you need full CPU speed. Load balancing on these hybrid chips is done by Intel's "Thread Director" technology, which your operating system must support for optimal performance. Currently, Windows 11 has it, Linux support is in progress, and it's not and won't be available for Windows 10 (you can use Alder Lake chips with Windows 10, but performance can be a combination).

But on Core i5 and below, most of these chips have P cores. This would be great for gaming or any other task where some fast cores do the job - Tom Hardware has done some initial review of the Core i5-12400 paired with more memory DDR4 RAM, and in game benchmarks, I've kept it. The most expensive Ryzen 5000 series and the 11th generation Core chips. But electronic cores may be lost for CPU-based video encoding or any kind of display that can effectively use all CPU cores at once.

Core i9 chips have eight P cores and eight electronic cores (and note that only P cores have Hyperthreading, which is why you instead have 32 threads, 24 threads (you might expect).) Core i7 has eight P cores but only four. Unlike their K-series counterparts, non-K Core i5 chips have six P-core chips and no E-core chips. Given that 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th generation chips were all replicated in the Skylake architecture in 2015, and the number of cores was the same as the 8th generation Coffee Lake chips in 2017, these should be our best budget processors. I've seen it for a while (it also helps Intel that AMD is basically spending $200 or less on CPU space with Ryzen 5000 series chips.)
