Epic changed Google Play IAPs in 2020, but the contract says it can't do that. This time, Google is suing Epic for breach of contract.
Epic has signed contracts with Google and Apple and pledged to use virtual payment systems for in-app purchases. As part of efforts to unlock payment systems (and avoid 30 percent of the cost per platform), Epic has boldly stopped updating Android and iOS apps that shift payment processing from in-app purchases for platforms to Epic. Both Google and Apple Home Systems claim that this action is a violation of their App Store agreements with Epic.
Apple filed a lawsuit last month. Epic had to pay $3.65 million in compensation and cover Apple's lost revenue from three months of Epic's automatic payments. After this ruling, Google also wants its lost money, and is now opposing Epic, hoping for a similar ruling. Google's suit states: "Epic intentionally hacks Fortnite to release it on Google Play using a non-Google Play payment method for in-app content. By doing so, Epic has deducted the cost of its services under Google from the DDA for in-app purchases made through Google Play.”Advertising
Google continues: “Users who downloaded the incompatible version of Fortnite before it was removed from Google Play can still use Epic's third-party payment mechanism to make in-app purchases - let Epic avoid paying For the services agreed with Google for these purchases”
Google says “Epic has unfairly paid for them” and is seeking to recover lost revenue and damages.
Google's complaint also takes time to blur the line between Android and iOS, because “unlike competitors like Apple, Google doesn't require Android users or developers to use Google Play to download, install, or distribute apps. Isn't it available at Android, and “most Android phones” are preloaded with multiple app stores.Google claims that “consumers and developers do not have to use Google Play; They choose to use Android app stores and distribution channels. p>
Corollary: If Epic doesn't like the Play Store rules, you can go elsewhere for free. p>
