American roads were not safe at all compared to other countries. But the pandemic has made the situation worse with a shocking increase in accidents and deaths of drivers and pedestrians in 2020, despite the decrease in the number of miles traveled by Americans. Reducing this catastrophic loss is one of the goals of the autonomous car industry, which often cites (perhaps misleading) statistics claiming that 94% of all accidents result in death due to human error.

But some of the technology companies that have revolutionized audiovisual vehicles are also interested in improving traffic infrastructure. On Wednesday, Volodyne Lidar announced that as part of its smart infrastructure solution, it will deploy a lidar-based traffic control system at a dangerous intersection in Austin, Texas.

This 3D realistic system creates road and intersection maps, replacing the current suite of induction loop detectors, cameras and radar. Velodyne has joined Nvidia's Metropolis app and will use Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier edge processors to interpret data. Velodyne is installing lead sensors to monitor traffic, at the intersection of 7 East and Springdale Road. Veloden says the site's history of accidents and fatalities, combined with the high speeds and congestion, makes it an ideal place to start.
