The French lion tasted the last victory at La Sarthe in 2009. No race is as important for a French company as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sure, the classic annual endurance game is tougher than ever, now they need not only complete reliability but full speed because the big hand goes twice a day. To add to the pressure, everything happens in front of a larger crowd than almost any other sporting event you can think of. So, after a hiatus of more than a decade, Peugeot returns to Le Mans with a focus on the overall winner. The company hopes to do just that with a new lineup that was officially revealed to the world on Tuesday morning. It's called 9x8.

Peugeot achieved its first success at Le Mans in 1992 and 1993 in the final days of Group C. Then he turned his attention to Formula 1 for a time, and with less success he supplied McLaren, Jordan, and then Prost. In 2007, Peugeot returned to endurance racing to counter the dominance of Audi, and in 2009 it defeated the Germans at Le Mans with its prototype 908. In 2012, the company planned to introduce a combined version of the 908 before scrapping the entire post-stasis program for business.

However, we had a brief golden period for the hybrid endurance runner between 2013-2017 as Toyota and then Porsche joined forces with Audi in the LMP1h group at Lehmann. But the LMP1h is expensive, even if it makes the most attractive rotary racing cars. The new Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) regulations are an attempt to address this issue by allowing some technical freedom (and hopefully road related) and road lighting along with other measures to keep costs healthy.

ReadingToyota wants to acquire Le Mans with its GR010 hybrid prototype, building itself from the 333SP since the late 1990s. (There is a separate law here in the US called LMDh starting in 2023, and this attracts input from Acura, Audi, BMW and Porsche, as well as potential input from Cadillac and Hyundai. They write the two groups. These rules work together so that the LMH and LMDh cars can Competition.)

The LMH cars don't have to be hybrids, but Peugeot chooses a hybrid for the 9X8. . 2.6L (500 kW) 6-cylinder internal combustion engine, 90° turbocharged steering, rear wheels, electric motor/generating unit 268 hp (200 kW) mounted on the front axle and 900 V battery. However, the total output is 670 horsepower, so both the V6 and the electric motor don't produce maximum power at the same time. The LMH regulations were originally intended to draw racing versions of road-legal supercars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, and so the regulations allow for a road-like car style, something Peugeot used here. Notably, the 9X8 lacks a rear spoiler. “Designing the 9X8 has been an emotional experience because we have been inventing, innovating and exploring unconventional ways to improve the car’s free-running performance, especially aerodynamics,” said Olivier Johnson, 9X8 Technical Director, Peugeot. "These regulations state that only an adjustable aerodynamic device is permitted, without specifying the rear wing. Our calculations and simulations have shown that high performance is possible without potential."

"The lack of a rear spoiler in the Peugeot 9X8 is an important innovation step." Said Jean-Marc Vinot, Director of Stellants Cars. "We have achieved a degree of aerodynamic efficiency that allows us to eliminate this advantage. However, don't ask how! We are intent on keeping this secret as secret as possible!" My theory is that the LMH's target of about 3:30 at Lehman means aerodynamics won't be as important as what prototypes spend 15 seconds faster, but I could be completely wrong.
