https://safirsoft.com Forget about looks, love technology: the $83,200 BMW iX electric chassis

The iX has a range of 300 miles and uses the latest and greatest BMW technology. The third generation of BMW's electric cars gave the automaker a lot of information about EVs and more stable production. But the i3 taught BMW as much as it could, and now it's time to apply those lessons to most major electric vehicles. These days, it's little more than an original SUV, so BMW developed a new model to showcase the company's fifth electric drivetrain.

BMW flew to Munich and spent seven nights in hotels for IAA Mobility and then boarded two new electric cars, the iX and i4, in the same week (you can read about their second car in two weeks). Ars does not accept critical editorial content. Enter the 2022 BMW iX.

Deflation may be a myth in economics, but it is in the auto industry. Automakers develop new technology and release it first in their more expensive cars, before expanding the range to show such features in cheaper models. This is especially true of German luxury brands such as BMW and Sade, which in the past used the flagship 7-Series sedan as their standard carrier and provided items such as their first true entertainment system. But the big sedan has disappeared among the people who buy big luxury cars, so it's time to buy the flagship SUV. Steel and carbon fiber composites in the roof frame and the A and B pillars. More specifically, BMW used carbon fiber for the side frame, floor plate and rear hatch frame. This material reduces weight compared to regular plastic plus has a little extra structural strength. As a result, the curb weight is 5,534 lb (2,510 kg), which is about the same ballpark as the X8 as the V8. The iX is slightly smaller than the X7 on the outside: 195 in (4,953 mm long, 77.4 in (1,967 mm) wide), 66.7 in (1,695 mm) high and 118.1 in (3000 mm) wheelbase but a superior battery pack means the electric-powered vehicle That the iX's interior is comparable in size to the X7. Previous electric motors have learned that means the new drive unit - which integrates the motor, single-speed gearbox and inverter - has 40% greater power density than before.

A copper stepper motor that uses a stator is a synchronous motor (with an excited electric motor) (not a permanent magnet synchronous motor).BMW says that using electricity rather than magnets means it has much more precise magnetic field control, and as a result, the motor can Provides a very sharp torque curve, but can reduce the magnetic field when the engine is not needed and increase overall drive performance.Permanent Inc. also helps BMW in the pursuit of greenness according to its supply chain.

$83,200 US before tax credits or Options List

Drive units can come with different outputs, but on startup we only have one iX configuration for the model in 2022 we receive: $82,300 iX xDrive50 (before the $7,500 IRS tax credit). The front-wheel drive unit has a maximum power of 268 hp (200 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm). The rear peak is 335 hp (250 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). However, co-production can also send battery power to both engines simultaneously - in this case, 516 hp (385 kW) and 564 lb-ft (765 Nm).

The voltage battery pack achieved similar results in terms of increased energy density - about 40% compared to the i3 output battery. BMW supplies prismatic cells from CATL and Samsung SDI, but the rest is done in-house with a new battery at its Dingolfing plant. The iX xDrive50 uses a 106.3 kWh package (usable; total capacity is 111.5 kWh) consisting of six 50-cell modules and five other 40-cell modules.

That's enough for an EPA range of 300 miles (482 km), although the official EPA arrangement has been announced with the vehicle entering the US market in the first quarter of 2022. Scope WLTP, which is rarely associated with real-world driving (at least in the US), rates the iX xDrive50 at 391 miles (630 km).

I'm optimistic that BMW's estimate of 300 miles is correct. Since leaving the factory 1,235 miles (1,987 km) ago, the iX I tested averaged 2.8 mph (22.1 kWh/100 km), which includes a smooth running time on limited German motorways at 200 km per hour. .

My iX time was just over four hours or 160 miles (259 km) and it averaged 2.5 mph (24.6 kWh/100 km). That includes, however, driving into the mountains but not back, where gravity gives you a helping hand and allows you to replenish energy as you descend.

When it's time to charge, the iX can fast DC charging up to 195kW, 40 minutes or less for a 10-80% charge. The maximum single-phase AC charge is 11 kW, and charging from 0 to 100% in this method should take a total of 11 hours.

Still the driver

Without smart technology, you can't call the car the flagship of your new technology, and since BMW always makes cars for people who enjoy driving. We are proud to say that using technology to enhance and enhance the driving experience is something BMW has focused on.

The iX has three driving modes: Active, Sport and Personal (allows you to choose a combination of steering, suspension, throttle response, regenerative brakes, interior lighting, etc.). Efficiency is, as expected, the most efficient mode - throttle mapping reduces initial input and easily separates drive units so the iX moves quickly if the drive selector is in D position. Pedal driving, for those who prefer their BEV this way - what Simply use the drive selector to put the car in B instead of D. It steers the wheels and helps the steering wheel handle the extra pounds, and the optional air suspension does a very effective job of controlling the ride.

The iX isn't as pretty as the Rolls-Royce stealth we tested. earlier this year (which started life in Dingolfing before being sent to the UK for final assembly). But it's close, which is impressive for a car that costs a fifth. Like Rolls-Royce, it's going to be fun on current country roads when you're trying to slow down. Keep it in D position then add enough power here and there if necessary and move around in complete silence.

But the iX is still a BMW. The combination of Sport and B mode works very well for driving the Spirit on a winding road - something that is still important for the brand. In this case, you should only use the brake pedal (which combines regeneration and friction brakes) when braking hard. To brake at about 0.3g or less, all you need is to lift your foot through the accelerator pedal. The ride is long enough that the long brake can be easily adjusted even after a few minutes in the iX. However, even though steering gets heavier in the sport, it doesn't really make any extra sense.
