Apple has postponed plans to bring its employees back to the office by a month due to an increase in Covid-19 cases worldwide. The company wanted most of its workforce to return three days a week in September, but now it has changed that date to October at the earliest opportunity.
Bloomberg's Delay News refers to people familiar with the matter. This means that Apple has become one of the first tech giants in the US to change its plans to go back to work in person because it is a highly portable version of Delta that originated in India.
The number of global Covid-19 infections reached 190.5 million on Monday, driven by a single delta type, as well as an increase in the number of cases in 50 states. According to a New York Times tracker, Sunday's cases in the United States were 140 percent higher than they were two weeks ago, while hospitalizations increased by 34 percent and deaths by 33 percent.
While the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and Google have said that all or some of their employees can work remotely indefinitely, Apple has always advocated for face-to-face work.
“Despite all that we have been able to achieve while many of us have been apart, the truth is that something fundamental has been lost in the past year: each other,” the CEO said. Cook wrote in an internal email last month. "Video conferencing has certainly reduced the distance between us, but there are things that simply cannot be replicated."
Many Apple employees seem unable to share Cook's passion. The Verge reports that a group of workers on the Slack internal channel invited thousands of "remote workers" in a letter to Cook and other company leaders calling for Apple to adopt a flexible remote/location policy. “Face-to-face collaboration is essential to our culture and our future,” said Deirdre O'Brien, Senior Vice President of Retail and Apple People.
Bloomberg writes that Apple is testing a hybrid in-store and at work. From home to retail employees, as a result, most consumers choose to shop online even to remove restrictions. In the meantime, one month's notice is given before office workers return. p>
